Claude-Charlotte Desnoyez is a mid 19th century French landscape artist. Relatively unknown, her work on self-portraiture has remained even more obscure. Recently discovered in a private collection, three striking portraits of the young woman from 1850 have caught scholars’ interest and renewed research on this underrepresented female artist, who maintained friendships with Manet, notably corresponding with him on his self-portrait, after Tintoretto, of 1854.
